What do you do when a trusted supplier of 27 years asks if you’d you like to develop and install several brand-new stations, with unique demands, in a country where you have limited installation experience?

You jump at the chance.

At least that’s what the team at Campbell Scientific Canada (CSC) did when R.M. Young came knocking.

In early 2017, StormGeo, a global, advanced weather forecasting company, contacted R.M. Young to assist in creating and installing multiple integrated weather monitoring systems in Lumberton, North Carolina.

Given our long-standing relationship with R.M. Young, it was no surprise that Campbell Scientific was their first call. And despite CSC’s lack of installation experience in the United States, we were excited for the challenge and the opportunity to work with a global leader in weather forecasting.

But, we knew it wouldn’t be easy.

StormGeo was looking for stand-alone weather stations that were completely autonomous, and incorporated Verizon compatible modems, which posed a variety of challenges for us.

First, there was the issue of effectively transferring the data directly from each site to the end user, without a cloud-based application. Next, was the seemingly insurmountable task of incorporating Verizon compatible modems, considering Verizon is strictly a US-based service provider, and not accessible within Canada. And finally, there was the administrative task of obtaining working VISA’s for staff to complete the actual installs.

After hours of researching, developing and testing by the CSC team, the R.M. Young All Weather Station was built. Each integrated station features YOUNG’s leading-edge ResponseOne Weather Transmitter and tipping bucket precipitation gauge, Campbell Scientific’s CR300 Datalogger, and a 4G mini cellular modem with Verizon communication capabilities made possible by a local company here in Alberta, all of which are mounted upon a Kalitec 4.5m telescopic mast with a 20w solar panel. All collected data will be sent via FTP directly from the sites to StormGeo guaranteeing data security.

The stations are a cost-effective way to accurately measure:

  • barometric pressure,
  • relative humidity,
  • air temperature,
  • precipitation,
  • wind speed, and
  • wind direction.

Plus, they’re easy to install. A single CSC staff member will install a total of 5 R.M. Young All Weather Stations in just 2-3 days on sites around Lumberton, NC, this July.

These installations mark what we hope to be the first of many installs in new global locations for CSC, as we continue to find new opportunities and ways of meeting our client’s unique challenges.
