Testing the multipoint measurement principle against single point measurement

A weather forecasting group in Europe has begun testing the Weatherpia SDMS-30 Multipoint Snow Depth sensor against existing single point laser sensors in its network. The trial is being conducted to determine the reliability of results and the potential for replacing their existing sensor suite with multipoint laser sensors within a few years time.

Multipoint Snow Depth Sensor Advantages

The group is currently using single point snow depth sensors. The data from single point sensors can be unreliable because they are subject to issues with icing, can be prone to background light distortion, and due to the measurement principle, do not account for surface movements (offsets due to frost/defrost conditions) or patchy snow. The group is testing the functionality of the relatively new multipoint laser sensors, which can eliminate these errors and provide more accurate snow depth data.
