Which RWIS Solution is Right for You?

All CSC RWIS solutions are designed to be:

  • Rugged to withstand even the harshest environmental conditions.
  • Low-power offering either solar or AC power, depending on the system you select.
  • Compatible allowing for easy integration with any 3rd party hardware or software.

Whether you’re looking to build a new RWIS network, expand or densify an existing network, or are seeking cost-effective alternatives to full RWIS stations, CSC has a solution for you.


Mini RWIS

Our Mini RWIS solution provides meaningful operational data that allows you to begin monitoring and reacting to roadway conditions in a meaningful way.

Mini RWIS incorporates infrared technology to measure road surface temperatures in a non-intrusive way. It also measures air temperature, humidity and dewpoint, covering all the basic building blocks of an effective road weather solution.

Flexible Install Options
With the ability to be mounted on a quick installation pole or existing infrastructure (street lighting or existing signage) the Mini RWIS has a variety of convenient installation locations. And, being powered through solar allows Mini RWIS to be completely self-sufficient.

If your roadside real-estate is limited, but you still want high quality road weather data, Mini RWIS is the solution for you.

Ideal For:

  • Municipalities looking for to establish a cost-effective method of gathering road weather data to help improve road maintenance operations.
  • Larger jurisdictions looking to densify their road weather data network to monitor microclimates and improve highway
    maintenance operations.


RWIS Essentials

Our more robust solution, RWIS Essentials is an all-encompassing road weather solution. Comprised of road sensors, atmospheric sensors, telemetry, a remote processing unit (RPU) and various power connections, RWIS Essentials will get you accurate and reliable road weather data with the convenience of being mounted onto existing infrastructure.

Choose between the following options:

Invasive

The standard RWIS option, our invasive solution involves a road pavement sensor being embedded into the asphalt to measure surface and sub-surface parameters. Parameters include:

  • Road surface condition status (wet, dry, ice covered, ect.)
  • Water film height
  • Salinity values
  • Friction values
  • Road surface temperature
  • Ice percentage
  • Road freezing temperature
  • Sub-surface temperature

The invasive solutions can run on solar or AC power.

Ideal For:

  • Collecting highly accurate road weather data in remote locations where AC power may not be readily available

Non-Invasive

Our non-invasive option utilizes a combination of optical, infrared, pyrometer and laser technologies to measure road weather data. Parameters provided by these sensors include:

  • Road surface condition status (wet, dry, ice covered, ect.)
  • Layer thickness of water, snow and ice
  • Friction values
  • Road surface temperature
  • Ice percentage
  • Freezing point temperature

These stations typically require AC power.

Ideal For:

  • Collecting highly accurate road weather data without having to block traffic flow or disturb the road surface to allow for the installation of a embedded road puck.

Overall, the RWIS Essentials options is ideal for municipalities or larger jurisdictions looking to establish or expand their road weather network in situations where roadside real estate is more available.


RWIS+

RWIS+ is our all-encompassing road weather solution. Typically, RWIS+ includes two invasive sensors and one non-invasive sensor. Atmospheric sensors are also included, and may consist of:

  • Wind speed & direction
  • Air temperature, relative humidity & dewpoint
  • Atmospheric pressure
  • Visibility and present weather
  • Precipitation sensors
  • Snow accumulation sensors

This system also includes a remote processing unit, telemetry, solar or AC power and an all-weather enclosure. A camera may be included for a more complete picture or road and traffic conditions. The system is also installed on a 30-foot foldable tower, which allows for measurements to be taken at ideal heights for improved accuracy.

Forecasting for Road Maintenance Efficiency
RWIS+ offers the most complete set of road weather data. Measuring local road conditions in combination with atmospheric conditions allows for the condition of the roadway to be built into forecasting models. This allows for the most accurate recommendations for road maintenance activities, resulting in the optimization of resources used.

Ideal For:

  • Establishing an RWIS network, typically in a highway setting or in areas within a municipality that have a fair amount of roadside real estate.
  • Expanding an RWIS network on a long stretch of highway.
