Overview

The SBS Range of precipitation sensors (rain gauges) utilises the proven aerodynamic shape of the ARG100 and takes it to the next level. This sensor is manufactured from specifically formed aluminium material which allows for fine tuning of the aerodynamic shape to further reduce the wind effect.

Detailed Description

The SBS gauge can be purchased with three different sizes of funnel, adding flexibility for our users’ application. The small funnel size (SBS314) is a very popular export to our large consumer base in Eastern Asia where rainfall intensities are very high and a smaller orifice is beneficial. The SBS500 and SBS1000 are popular in more temperate climates where a greater funnel-size provides superior aerial coverage to low to medium rainfall intensities. The SBS314 and SBS500 have been workshop tested to over 900mm/hr. A rainfall intensity adjustment formula is available for the SBS Range by request or from the EML website (www.emltd.net)

The SBS is the result of over three years extensive fieldwork carried out by the renowned Dr. Ian Strangeways (TerraData) to determine the most effective design of precipitation sensor for accurate rainfall measurement in all climatic conditions, irrespective of wind speed and type of precipitation e.g. drizzle or heavy, convective or tropical rain. The unique design and aerodynamic shape of the SBS rain gauge increases measurement accuracy and precision by capturing more rainfall than traditionally shaped cylindrical gauges, minimising out-splash and reducing rainfall losses caused by evaporation.

The funnel of the gauge is made from 2.5mm thick powder coated aluminium while the base is manufactured in LM6 marine grade aluminium. The gauge can therefore be installed in extremely hostile conditions. A version with internal heaters is also available for cold climate installations. If you value accuracy and precision and require longevity and durability, the SBS is the precipitation sensor for you – just ask the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) who have installed 300+ SBS’s in their sensor networks!
