Modem to RS232 issue on CR1000 and CR800

PPeters Mar 21, 2019 02:58 AM

hi,

I have run into an unexpected issue with setting up a new modem to replace some legacy UDP modems(both generic)

The main roll out is to have the modem (Netcomm NTC-100) connected to our CR10x loggers via SC932A.. this works tested no issue..

We however hit a problem with a CR1000 which I replicated on a cr800. The modem connects fine to the CSI/O port on both loggers but wont connect to the rs232. on the rs232 we are dropping the sc932A and replacing with a null modem cable.

I tested also on a CR310 and this works with the rs232 null modem cable config so thinking I have a setup issue on the 1000 and 800??

I have the modem set to 9600 baud matched on the loggers, I have done some tests using the watchdog terminal window and can see the traffic on the csi/o and cr300 connections but not on the others, thinking a flow control or wake up issue?

what is the recommended settings for the RS-232/hanshake, on/off? buffer sizes etc

any help much appreciated

Hi,

normally a modem running right on the CSIO with the SC932 must also work on the RS232.

With a simple male-male null modem cable.

I have two obvious ideas:

1) is the RS232 port set, via devconfig utility to 9600 fixed?

Does the program running in the logger not use the RS232 port?

Do you think that recently wanting to leave the rs232 port free I used the C7 and C8 ports with only the TX and RX of the modem without changing any parameters.

Try reading one of the CS manuals for Wavecom/fastrack modems that used the CS, you will find a lot of setup information (AT COMMAND) valid for most modems on the market. For example this:

Thanks Smile,

yeah have all the ports and modem locked down to 9600 as initial tests on the 10x

Unfortunately the manual not alot of help as I dont believe I have a modem issue, I have done another test and believe i have a configuration issue on the cr800 and cr1000 rs232port.

test...

I set up the modem connected via csio, pc connected to logger via rs232 (cr800)

with a term emulator i connect to the modem... if I type in the term window I can see the characters in the Watch window for the logger ME port..  so I know the data path is working, also know the rs232 is working (for PC)

now if I reverse

so modem to rs232 (cr800 with null modem) and connect to logger via PC with SC32B

if i watch the rs232 port I get no traffic of typed characters in the term window?? so why is this?

now the third check

modem the rs232 (CR300 with null modem) pc connected via usb (luv this feature) and running term emulator to modem

now if i type characters I can see in the watch window??

so what is different between the CR800 and CR300 in the rs232 setup? why can i get data flow on the cr300 and not the 800? using same cables and same modem?

slightly confused

I think it is to do with RS232 on/off and settings but cant find any supporting info or recommendations

cheers
