RF451 - Loggernet distance

ariklee Jul 17, 2018 08:49 PM

What is the maximum distance between an RF451 master and the computer running Loggernet? Is it better to use USB or serial cable for a long run?  Thanks,

Eric

RS232 should be able to go up 50ft. Use twisted pair shielded cable.

The USB specification allows cables only up to 5m, and you might have problems before then depending on the cable.

Thanks @JDavis. Sounds like a homemade cable. Do I wire pin 2 <--> pin 3,  pin 3 <--> pin 2, and the drain (at the Loggernet computer end only) to pin 5?

Don't swap pins 2 and 3. You are just extending the connection. Pin 5 needs to be connected at both ends. So, you need 2 twisted pair. CAT5 cable works well, and is easy to acquire. Yes, the shield drain should be connected only on one end.
