All SAT HDR GOES transmitters have an operating system (OS) which continues to be updated by
the factory. Because of these improvements, we recommend users download the most
recent version of OS to their SAT HDRs. The most up-to-date version is shown below. A copy
of the instructions on how to update the OS in the SAT HDR is included in the download
below.
The current version (v3.3.4) is recommended for all SAT HDR GOES transmitters.
If you wish to determine the OS in your SAT HDR GOES please refer to
Section B below.
Note Concerning Datalogger OS (Not to be confused with SAT HDR OS):
Not all Campbell Scientific dataloggers are compatible with the SAT HDR GOES. The following
is a list of compatible dataloggers...

A) Equipment And Software Needed To Perform The SAT HDR GOES Update:
- +12v power supply for SAT HDR GOES
- RS232 Serial cable (9 pin female to 9 pin male; SC12 ribbon cable will do)
- Computer with the following software:
- Dcpcomm.exe
- DCPCOMM Help.chm
- GoesTerminalVersion3_0.cfg
- HDR GOES Firmware V3_3_4.a90
- PTTComm.ini
(see below for file descriptions)
The newest version of Dcpcomm.exe will work with older SAT HDR's but old versions will not
work with new SAT HDR's. It is always best to use the most recent version which is included
with the current OS download.
All required files, including instructions for updating the OS on the SAT HDR GOES, are
available at the following link: Download (EXE, 781K).
Retrieve and extract these files to a directory on your computer (ex: C:\>Campbellsci\SAT_HDR).
B) To Determine The OS In SAT HDR GOES:
Ensure the power to the SAT HDR GOES is turned off. Connect the Config port on the SAT HDR to the
serial COM port of your computer using a 9-pin serial cable (use the SC12 ribbon cable or similar).
In Dcpcomm go to Terminal > Open terminal window. Turn the SAT HDR on. The LED will cycle
through green, red, yellow, green, off, then remain green. The terminal window will show:
XP
SIEMAC Limited Multi-Data Rate GOES Transmitter
Version 2.2
(and more messages)
The OS version here is 2.2. Higher numbers reflect more current versions.
C) Instructions for Loading New Operating System to the SAT HDR GOES Satellite Transceiver:
- Make sure the SAT HDR is off and the GPS antenna is not connected. No other
antenna is required.
- Connect the Auxiliary I/O port on the SAT HDR to the serial COM port of your
computer using a 9-pin serial cable (use the SC12 ribbon cable or similar).
- Determine what COM port the RS232 is on your PC (go to the Control Panel if
necessary). Ensure no programs are running on your PC (including your email program).
Run Dcpcomm.exe. By default, Dcpcomm selects COM1. If it needs to
be changed go into File > Com port settings and set the COM port. Choose 9600 baud.
Set the "Prompt Wait" to 30 seconds. Leave the "Verify data as it is written" box
unchecked. Click on "OK". If you have made changes, close all windows then re-open
Dcpcomm and go to the next step.
- Under the "DCP Communications" pull-down menu select "Send New Program".
A dialog box appears. Choose "Yes". When the file selection box opens, select the
operating system file (ex: HDR GOES Firmware V3_3_4.a90) or whatever version file you have. Select the
file but do not click open yet.
- Turn on SAT HDR by applying the +12V (Power must have been off for >30 seconds
before turning on). The status LED will cycle through green, red, yellow, green, off, then
remain green. Within 5 seconds, press and hold down the reset button for a minimum
of 8 seconds. The LED will turn yellow. When you release the button, the LED turns off.
This puts the transmitter in a mode where it is ready to accept new firmware. You now
have ~40 seconds to start the operating system download by clicking on OPEN in the
Dcpcomm dialog box. If you take longer to begin, the transmitter needs to be powered
down and the process repeated.
- A "percentage complete" indicator bar will appear on your PC screen if the procedure
is going properly. After this, a "verification" indicator bar will appear. This process will
require at least 15 minutes of processing time on your PC. Again, make sure no other
computer programs are running at this time. It will notify you when the process is
complete.
- When programming is complete, turn the SAT HDR power off for >30 seconds by
unplugging the +12V. Remove the 9-pin serial cable from the Auxiliary I/O and plug it
into the RS232 Config port. In Dcpcomm go to Terminal > Open terminal window.
Turn the SAT HDR back on. The status LED will again cycle through green, red, yellow,
green, off, then remain green. The terminal window will show the version number of the
operating system plus some diagnostics. Make sure all the tests passed. For
example: "EEPROM test passed".
- If they haven't, try reloading the operating system.
Press the reset button for >5 seconds. Observe the LED. It should turn yellow
during this reset period and turn off when you release the button. In about 30 seconds
diagnostics will appear again in the terminal window. The SAT HDR GOES now
contains the updated software.
- If you have trouble with the transmitter after sending the new operating system,
try reloading the operating system. Make sure the power supply you are using is +12V.
Also, make sure you press the reset button in all the way, a pen works well. If you
consistently have trouble loading the software, feel free to call a Campbell Scientific
representative for technical support.
- Reconfigure your transmitter using DCPComm and the GOESTerminalVersion3_0.cfg
configuration file. Older versions are not compatible with the latest OS. We recommend
all old configuration files (*.cfg) be removed from your SAT HDR GOES software directory.
