Installation Tip for Soil Moisture Probes in India
During my first installation in India I noticed something I'd never experienced in my many installations in Canada. We had to install two CS616 Soil Moisture Probes. These sensors have two parallel 30 cm stainless steel rods that need to be inserted horizontally into the soil. Our goal was to dig a pit then insert the sensors into the wall. After the pit was dug we found it nearly impossible to insert the rods because of the hardness of the soil. After repeated tries and the near breaking of our pilot rods, we decided to super-soak the soil with plenty of water. As this infiltrated over the day and night, we found it much easier to install the sensors. For other stations, we now make sure we have plenty of water to soak the area after the insertion pit is dug.

Winning Against Insects
Some installations in India have experienced insects getting into the fiberglass enclosures. They may come in through the cable entry port or chew through the rubber gasket around the door. One installation we visited in West Bengal had a well established colony on the floor of the enclosure. Unfortunately, they had set up residence inside several pieces of equipment and chewed into the desiccant packages. Waste products and chewing activities quickly damaged the equipment. To help prevent this, always make sure there is a suitable amount of putty in the cable entry ports on the enclosure and place two or three moth balls in a corner. The vapours don't harm the equipment but are a deterrent to insect invasion.
